National Children’s Hospital’s new app helps identify signs of concussion in athletes

We’re in the middle of football season — whether it’s Monday Night Football or Friday Night Football — and before the action, there’s an app from the National Children’s Hospital called SCORE which will help you identify if your child, partner or teammate or anyone has a suspected concussion.

“SCORE” stands for Safe – Concussion – Outcome – Recovery and Education.

7News’ Adrianna Hopkins spoke with the app’s creator, Pediatric neuropsychologist Dr. Gerard Gioiawith the National Children’s Hospital.

He said many times, people only think of the loss of consciousness as a sign of concussion. But that only happens less than 10% of the time in concussions. He said you should look for signs including:

  • Is the person taking it slow?
  • Having trouble gathering your thoughts?
  • In pain?
  • Dizzy?
  • The balance?

“That should prompt you to pick up the app and go more specifically. And the nice thing is that the app gives a little report of what you just said, you know. say, what’s going on? said Dr. Gioia.

Dr. Gioia said a medical professional won’t always be nearby when your child falls off a bike or skateboard. Having this application and report will give you a head start in preventing further trauma to that person’s brain.
