Harris team reportedly keeps Biden off campaign trail in ‘slow split’

The Vice President’s Campaign Kamala Harris seems to keep the president Joe Biden at arm’s length, as the 81-year-old itches to hit the campaign trail for his former running mate.

Three people said Axios that the Harris campaign continues to say they will return to the president’s team when to send him to the field.

The Harris campaign sees Biden as a political liability, but he doesn’t I want them to say straight up that they don’t want him to become vice president. Democrats and some of Biden’s staff continue to walk on eggshells around Biden’s ego and feelings, according to the publication.

One person said it was like a slow split, with Harris’ team respecting Biden but not wanting to plug a president with a 39 percent approval rating, according to the data. FiveThirtyEight mediafor their candidate who is in a historically close race.

“He’s a reminder of the last four years, not the new way forward,” one person said Axiosreferencing Harris’ catchphrase.

The Biden team reportedly held open days for the campaign, but Harris let those days pass, two people told the outlet, who noted that a White House official dismissed that version of events.

With Election Day just over a week away, there are currently no events scheduled for Biden and Harris to campaign together.

Several people on Biden’s team, however, believe the sitting president could be helpful to Harris and that her team is underestimating her appeal among white, working-class voters in states like Pennsylvania.

Biden surpassed Hillary Clinton’s support with some of these voters, which was vital to his 2020 victory in the state and the election as a whole.

The Biden team reportedly took stronger action recently, going to Pittsburgh, where Biden campaigned on his own this weekend, which several people on the Harris team were initially unaware of, according to the two people who spoke. Axios.

A White House official told reporters that the Harris campaign had arranged the trip and that he was unaware.

“There is always speculation in political circles, but this is not correct,” a White House spokesman said. Axios. “We are in close contact with the campaign to determine when, where and how the president can be helpful.”

But the Harris campaign sent an email outlining its Saturday events that did not mention Biden’s appearances.

Earlier this month, Biden made an unannounced visit to the White House briefing room, where he answered questions from reporters and accidentally hijacked media coverage of a Harris campaign event in Michigan.

A number of Harris aides were frustrated this week as Biden told supporters in New Hampshire that Trump should be jailed. Biden added that he meant “politically,” but Trump and his fellow Republicans still used the disclosure as evidence that the Biden administration unfairly targeted the former president.

Biden aides have had discussions about the president going after Senate candidates in Maryland and his home state of Delaware, but the White House says that’s in addition to, not instead of, campaigning for Harris.
