9 reasons why bosses no longer want to hire Gen Xers

For Gen Xers, securing a high-paying job or climbing the corporate ladder can be daunting. Surprisingly, there are many bosses who don’t want to hire Gen X anymore.

When applying online, it’s not uncommon to face rejection or be ghosted by a potential employer. This can be understandably frustrating, especially since many Gen Xers are more than qualified to do the job.

Unfortunately, if Gen X wants to do this, it needs to have more than strong qualifications. It’s sad, but the very things that should open doors for them may now be holding them back.

Here are nine reasons why bosses no longer want to hire Gen Xers

1. They are overqualified

The number one reason bosses no longer want to hire Gen Xers is that they are overqualified. With 20+ years of experience, Gen Xers are increasingly likely to be more qualified than the hiring manager.

While this might sound good on paper, this great achievement is costing Gen X dearly, as most employers don’t want to shell out six figures for an employee. The the average salary for generation X is currently $101,500, which is higher than that of all other age groups.

People who have recently graduated from college do not have enough qualifications to warrant super high salaries. Feeling desperate, these young people will work for money if it means getting the experience they need to boost their careers.

And with so many people working for less, the need to pay over-qualified Gen Xers has virtually disappeared.

2. They are not as tech savvy

Another reason bosses no longer want to hire Gen X is that they are not as tech-savvy as younger generations.

With new programs emerging and new methods being incorporated, it can be hard for Gen Xers to keep up. They didn’t to grow up in the age of technologywhich makes it harder for them to adapt. Unfortunately, companies don’t want to take the time to hold their hand and teach them how to use Google Sheets.

This is why they leave out Gen X. If they hire people from the younger generations, they don’t have to train them as much or keep them updated. Younger generations already know how to use different forms of technology because that’s what they grew up with.

3. I cannot provide a work-life balance

Another reason bosses stop hiring Gen Xers is that companies can’t provide a work-life balance.

Most Gen Xers have children or grandchildren to care for. Because of this, they don’t have time to work overtime or record on Saturday nights.

Amy Glass, Senior Facilitator at BRODY Professional Development, finds that Gen Xers are increasingly likely to change jobs for a more flexible schedule and work-life balance.

Unfortunately for Gen X, this is not preferable in the eyes of an employer. It’s sad, but most employers don’t care if someone needs work-life balance or extra time off. All they care about is making money, which means if Gen X won’t work overtime, they aren’t considered worth hiring.

4. I’m closer to retirement

Some bosses don’t see the point in investing in someone who’s just going to be gone in a few years. If they’re going to invest the time, money and resources to hire someone, it might as well be someone who plans to stick around for the long haul.

A review of aging in employment found that age discrimination is a real phenomenon in the workplace. Specifically, the researchers found that those aged 40-49 were increasingly less likely to be considered for employment, and this trend worsens as people age.

5. They lack collaboration skills

Some bosses assume that people from older generations don’t know how to get along with others because of their closed-minded ways.

While this stereotype is messed up, it has some merit as humans were found to become more and more closely related as they grow older.

This may explain why bosses hesitate to hire older people. To avoid drama and misunderstandings, most bosses won’t hire Gen Xers because they don’t want to deal with them in the workforce.

Is that correct? No, but when weighing the pros and cons, many employers prefer to play it safe.

6. They are not enthusiastic workers

This might come as a surprise, but another reason why bosses no longer want to hire Gen-Xers is that they are not seen as enthusiastic workers.

On the surface, this might sound completely ridiculous. Older generations are known to put their heart into everything they do. However, looking at the research might paint a different picture, like Aflac found that 57% of Gen X workers are burned out.

With this in mind, it’s no surprise that Gen X might struggle to be enthusiastic in the workplace. And this lack of enthusiasm is another reason why bosses don’t want to hire them.

7. They will not work overtime unless they are paid

The next reason bosses no longer want to hire Gen Xers is that they demand fair overtime pay. It’s ridiculous, but many companies don’t like paying people the right wages. In their eyes, employees are replaceable.

For this reason, they may have no problem denying Gen X overtime pay. They believe that if Gen X will not advance and work overtime they will simply find someone more desperate to fill the role.

Additionally, some companies will refuse to hire Gen X because they know how strict Gen X is with their boundaries. Not wanting to argue about extra work, they’ll bypass Generation X and find someone more convenient to hire.

8. I don’t keep up with trends

Another reason why bosses stop hiring Gen Xers is that they are not aware of the trends. In the age of technology, many companies use social media to promote products. However, reaching a wider audience is not easy.

This is why businesses need someone who is aware of trends and can use these trends to increase sales. Unfortunately for Gen X, most bosses don’t think they have it.

It’s terrible, but most companies prefer to hire younger generations to get the job done. This is probably because the younger generations are always on social media and know the current trending events.

9. I do not meet the education requirements

Finally, the last reason bosses don’t want to hire Gen Xers is that they don’t meet the educational requirements.

It’s ridiculous, but these days you need a bachelor’s degree to get your foot in the door. That means if Gen X wants to better employment opportunities he has to suck it up and take out a student loan.

Realistically, this is not possible for most. But despite Gen X’s years of experience, employers remain steadfast in their need for higher education.

Conformable Georgetown University Center for Education and the Workforce, by 2031, 72% of jobs will require a post-secondary degree and/or training. Which is why many bosses refuse to hire Gen Xers who, while more educated than the generations before them, tend to have less education than Millennials.
