One dead and dozens injured after “truck crash” in bus station near Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV — Emergency services in Israel are treating dozens of victims after a truck plowed into a bus while dropping off passengers at a bus stop near the Glilot military base, north of Tel Aviv, early Sunday.

A spokesman for the Israeli police force said a preliminary investigation indicated that the truck collided with the passengers as well as the bus.

Civilians at the scene “shot at the truck driver and neutralized him,” Israeli police said.

A 72-year-old man was taken to Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv following the attack. His condition deteriorated and he died from his injuries, the hospital confirmed to NBC News.

The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation, and Israeli police have not indicated whether they are treating the incident as a suspected terrorist attack or a traffic accident.

However, Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was a “natural response” to Israel’s actions in “Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem”.

A geolocated video by NBC News shows the immediate aftermath and the rescue operation, narrated in Hebrew by a woman who said she was on the bus that was hit.

“We are at the base of Haim Hertzog, a truck came at full power, hit us,” she said. We managed to escape, there are some of our people trapped, elderly trapped.” In the video, several people could be seen trapped under the truck, some of whom were responsive to rescuers.

“You can’t understand what’s going on here,” she said. “God, God, I can’t watch this.”

Ronit Glazer of Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency medical services, described a chaotic scene in a video posted by X as responders received a call about a “mass casualty event” near Glilot Junction.

She said the MDA dispatched “nursing units, ambulances, motorcycles, first responders, paramedics and EMTs” to the scene.

MDA EMTs and paramedics receive medical treatment and evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals. A total of 35 people were said to have been injured, including 6 seriously, 5 moderately and 20 lightly. Four suffer from anxiety.

United Hatzalah, a volunteer emergency service, said “a large number of pedestrians were involved” and that people were trapped under the truck 30 minutes after the incident.

In a separate incident on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces said “a terrorist accelerated his vehicle towards IDF soldiers who were conducting a counter-terrorism operation” in the village of Hizma in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The person was said to have pulled out a knife from the vehicle and “attempted to carry out a stabbing attack” but was killed by soldiers. No IDF injuries were reported.
