New York City drivers experiencing license plate peeling can now get a free replacement from the DMV, but only if they’re willing to accept a new plate number.

To request a free replacement, drivers must email the DMV at (email protected) with the current plate number in the subject line and include your name, address, phone number, peel plate number and a photo of the damaged plates. A new registration sticker will be supplied with the replacement.

Drivers who want to keep their current plate number can do so for a $20 fee. Note that boards with aging, chips or cracks due to wear and tear do not qualify for replacement.
