Man says he left gun on counter before son accidentally shot himself: court documents

Correction: This article previously said charges had been filed. No one is facing charges in connection with this incident at this time.

A man told police his son accessed his unsecured gun before he accidentally shot himself in the head in Newport News, court documents say.

The shooting happened Tuesday night in the 4200 block of Newsome Drive, according to police.

Court documents say when police arrived at the home, they found Tyree Maxwell holding her 3-year-old son on a blanket. The child had been shot in the head and was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, the documents said.

Maxwell told police he was an armed security guard and left his gun unsecured on the kitchen counter within reach of the child, documents say. He went into his bedroom and “heard a loud pop.” She then found her son lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
