OC Health Agency warns of cases of Legionnaires’ disease reported in the Westminster – Orange County Register

Seven cases of Legionnaires’ disease, a type of pneumonia, have been reported in the northwest end of Westminster, according to the OC Health Care Agency.

Legionnaires’ disease is caused by Legionella bacteria and thrives in warm water environments such as mist from cooling towers, hot tubs, and fountains. It is usually spread by inhalation, but is not contagious from person to person.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported increases in Legionella cases over the past year across the country. So far this year, 82 cases have been reported in Orange County. The health agency’s disease control and epidemiology team, as well as the county’s environmental health department, are investigating potential sources of the cluster of infections.

Symptoms of the disease are like other cases of pneumonia, including fever, headache, cough and difficulty breathing, and can be treated with antibiotics. The risk to anyone living in or visiting Westminster is very low, the agency reported, however, residents experiencing pneumonia-like symptoms are encouraged to visit their healthcare provider.

People who are 50 years of age or older, have a weak immune system, are smokers, or those who have chronic respiratory conditions are more likely to experience severe illness from Legionnaires’ disease.

Businesses and property owners, especially those with cooling towers, hot tubs or fountains, are encouraged to review their water management practices, including disinfecting to prevent bacterial growth and performing Legionella testing.
