CORAL SPRINGS, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) – A Coral Springs man is in federal custody Thursday morning following his arrest Wednesday for allegedly planning to blow up a business in New York City. The United States Department of Justice forwarded this notice to BocaNewsNow.com:

“Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, of Coral Springs, Florida, was arrested today on a criminal complaint alleging that he attempted to use an explosive device to damage or destroy a building used in interstate commerce.

Markenzy Lapointe, US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; Matthew G. Olsen, Assistant Attorney General for Homeland Security; and Jeffrey Veltri, FBI Special Agent in Charge, Miami Field Office, made the announcement.

According to court documents, the FBI began investigating Yener in February after receiving a tip that he was storing bomb-making blueprints in an unlocked storage facility. The FBI searched the facility and found bomb-making blueprints, numerous timer clocks, electronic circuit boards and other electronic components that could be used to build explosive devices. The FBI also discovered several Internet searches from Yener’s Google account for bomb-making matters dating back to 2017.

In June, Yener told a confidential FBI source about his desire to join an anti-government militia and build an explosive device. After meeting with an undercover FBI agent whom Yener believed to be part of a militia, Yener indicated that he wanted to target an American business located in New York City the week before Thanksgiving. His stated motivation for bombing the business was to achieve a “reboot” and/or “reset” of the United States government. Yener built a remote trigger for the explosive device and conducted research to determine where to place the bomb. Yener tasked undercover FBI employees with procuring the explosive element for the device, surveilling the business, and obtaining photographs of the building to identify the exact location to detonate the explosive device. Yener planned to wear a disguise when he planted the explosive device outside the business and recorded a message to be given to the media about the reasons for the attack. Yener anticipated that the impact of the explosion would be “like a small nuclear weapon going off” and that “(something) outside” the building would “be obliterated” and “anything inside would be killed.”

Yener had an initial appearance this afternoon and was remanded in custody with the right to request a hearing at a later date.

The FBI investigated the case with assistance from the Coral Springs Police Department and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Thakur and Abbie D. Waxman of the Southern District of Florida and U.S. Attorney Elisa Poteat of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case.”
