Man (60) arrested in investigation into fatal Creeslough blast – The Irish Times

A 60-year-old man has been arrested in the ongoing criminal investigation into the 2022 explosion in Creeslough, Co Donegal which resulted in the death of 10 people.

The man was arrested on Thursday in connection with alleged offenses against the Non-Fatal Offenses Against the Person Act 1997. An Garda Síochána said the investigation into the incident was ongoing. The man was detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a garda station in the North West region.

Ten people died in the Applegreen petrol station explosion on 7 October 2022. Those killed in the blast were aged between five and 59.

The investigation is being led by Donegal Local Police, supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and agencies including the Health and Safety Authority and the Utilities Regulatory Commission.

From the beginning of the investigation, the police focused on the gas system at the buildings on the site, which includes a block of flats. While there is no suggestion that the gas system was tampered with or that actions were taken to deliberately damage it, every aspect of how it was run and maintained was scrutinized.

In March, two men were detained in connection with the incident, marking the first arrests in the case. A man and a woman (40) have been arrested and questioned in connection with the fatal explosion in May. Following their release in March and May, the Gardai said a file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
