Police say the Overland Park sexual assault suspect has been arrested

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – Overland Park Police say a suspect has been arrested following a sexual assault and theft case that began Tuesday morning.

It happened in the area of ​​W. 97th Street and Reeder.

Police said the arrestee will be transported to the Johnson County Central Booking Center. The case will then be turned over to the Johnson County District Attorney’s office.

On Wednesday evening, Gabriel P. Hernandez of Kansas City, Kansas, was booked into the Johnson County Detention Center on a charge of rape. He was arrested by Overland Park police at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the booking log.

“I would like to thank our community, the members of our department, along with the Johnson County Crime Lab, the FBI Kansas City Career Criminal Task Force and our local media partners for their assistance in sharing the information we provided (Tuesday) regarding this horrific crime.” said Chief Doreen Jokerst. “I appreciate the collective efforts of everyone involved to keep the community safe.”

Police said the attack happened around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday at a home near West 97th Circle and Reeder Drive.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
