Jinja runs for a cause: Cancer awareness event draws hundreds

Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja (RHHJ) hosted the ‘Fight Women’s Cancer Run’ on Saturday to raise awareness and promote cancer screening and prevention.

This marked the sixth year in a row that RHHJ has held this event in October, spreading information about breast and cervical cancer throughout the month.

The event, held under the theme “Detect. Treat. Defeat,” began at Jinja Golf Club, Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Isanga Nakadama signaled the participants.

Dr. Margrethe Juncker from RHHJ outlined the goal of the event: “Creating more awareness about cancer. Our teams have carried out screenings in schools, businesses and health centers and we will expand these activities to provide prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and palliative care. care.”

Dr Juncker says RHHJ plans to deepen its coverage in Busoga sub-region and neighboring districts by opening new offices in Namayingo and Buyende.

“RHHJ is committed to helping as many women as possible,” added Dr Juncker. “People are becoming aware of cervical and breast cancer, which is a significant success.”

Executive Director Sylvia Nakami emphasized RHHJ’s engagement with local organizations, businesses and educational institutions, with the goal of engaging the entire country.

“Patients who have benefited from our program have become advocates, dispelling fears that cancer is a death sentence,” she said.

Rev. Can James Kivunike, Chairman of the Board of RHHJ, shared his motivation: “As a church person, I am involved because those who suffer are created by God.”
