A bomb cyclone knocks down trees across Stanley Park, limiting access

The bomb cyclone that hit BC’s south coast overnight downed a number of trees in Stanley Park, leading to restricted access Wednesday morning.

Footage obtained by CTV News shows downed trees, branches and debris along Stanley Park Drive, Lagoon Drive, sidewalks and bike lanes.

Crews closed some trails through the park and also the levee for the cleanup effort, which is expected to take hours.

CTV News reached out to the Vancouver Parks and Recreation Board for more information.

The intense storm that made landfall on Tuesday caused chaos in the region and an estimated 270,000 power outages across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland overnight. Service had been restored to about two-thirds of those BC Hydro customers by morning.

More damage is expected Wednesday, along with potential flooding along coastal areas from crashing waves.

A weather advisory from Environment and Climate Change Canada warns that high ocean levels and significant winds could lead to waves “exceeding the highest astronomical tide.”

“The storm-to-storm oval, southeasterly winds combined with the seasonally high sea will produce high water levels for near-water areas on the south coast,” the agency wrote in a 3:50 a.m. update i have “Coastal flooding is possible along exposed shorelines, particularly in low-lying areas.”
