Russia: Ukraine launched US-supplied ATACMS missiles into Russian territory

Russia says Ukrainian forces attacked the country’s western region using US-supplied long-range missiles known as ATACMS. US President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use them to strike targets inside Russian territory.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that six missiles were launched on Tuesday in the Bryansk region on the border with Ukraine. Five of them were said to have been shot down, but fragments of the other fell into the compound of a military facility, causing a fire.

The ministry said the fire was quickly extinguished and no casualties were reported.

The Ukrainian military said it hit an ammunition depot, causing 12 explosions. But he did not specify the type of weapons used.

Ukrainian media reported that this is the first time Kiev has used ATACMS for an attack inside Russia.

Attention is now focused on how Russia will respond to Ukraine’s latest attack.

In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that if Western nations allowed Ukraine to strike Russian territory with their long-range missiles, it would mean NATO countries were fighting Russia directly.

He said the move “will clearly change the very essence, the very nature of the conflict.”
