Theni district police have solved six burglary cases by formally arresting two persons lodged in the Coimbatore Central Jail and recovering 704 grams of gold.

The accused have been identified as Moorthi, 29, of Madurai district and Amsarajan, 26, of Periyakulam in Theni district. “We have totally recovered the gold jewelery they stole from all the six locked houses under PC Patti police station limits in 2023 and 2024,” Theni Police Inspector R Shiva Prasad said.

He said the modus operandi of the accused is to target locked houses. They would leave no fingerprints and also mask their faces to hide their identity while the images are captured by CCTV cameras.

The accused were taken into custody on November 12 and during interrogation spilled the beans about the hoarding of gold stolen from houses in PC Patti, five houses in 2023 and one house in 2024. In all these five burglaries, the accused deposed. hands on 704 grams of gold.

The police team along with independent witnesses took the accused to a certain place in the district and recovered the gold bar which they had buried. “The accused converted the gold jewelery into an ingot and buried it. All 704 grams of stolen gold were recovered intact. All our efforts were to recover 100% and we have achieved that,” the SP said.

The accused were again sent to judicial custody on Monday.

The SP said the police had already recovered 50 gold sovereigns from the same Moorthi earlier this year in connection with a similar case in Tenkarai police station limits.

The accused had been involved in more than 90 burglary cases in several districts. Moorthi had bought a tab in Rajapalayam for Rs 4 crore using the proceeds of the stolen properties.
