Geno Smith’s accuracy helps Seahawks win

When it comes to volume stats, Geno Smith’s performance in Sunday’s win over the 49ers doesn’t jump off the stat sheet.

In a season in which he threw for more than 300 yards four times, Smith’s 221 yards were his fourth-lowest total of the season and he didn’t throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 2024. But a a deeper look at the numbers shows that Smith still had a fantastic game despite those modest numbers, helping lead the Seahawks to a 20-17 victory over the 49ers.

Smith completed 25 of 32 attempts – including 7 of 8 on the game-winning drive – giving him a season-best completion percentage of 78.1 percent. But as NFL Next Gen Statistics illustrates, he’s been even better than that number might indicate.

According to Next Gen Stats, Smith had a +16.3% completion percentage above expectation (CPOE), Smith’s highest since having a +16.4% CPOE in last season’s Week 2 win in Detroit. Smith was particularly sharp on short and intermediate passes, completing all 19 of his attempts from under 10 yards for 121 yards and a +26.3 CPOE. On passes of 10+ yards through the air, Smith was 6-for-12 for 100 yards and an interception.

“He was dynamite,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after the game. “We talked about, after the pick, let’s stick with it, talk about clearing the next room, just go clear the next room and rock and roll. After he threw the pick, we stopped on defense, forced a field goal, and we came right back and scored the touchdown.”

Adding to his outstanding performance, Smith had 29 yards on two scrambles in Seattle’s game-winning drive, including the game-winning 13-yard touchdown, which was his second scramble touchdown of the season, along with his run 34-yard touchdown against the Broncos. in week 1.
