Man who robbed a postman sentenced to prison

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A man who robbed a mail carrier in Toledo has been sentenced to prison.

Michael Bush Jr. will spend five and a half years in federal prison for his role in robbing a postal operator.

The victim, who wished to remain anonymous, says she has severe PTSD, anxiety and is afraid to return to delivering mail.

“I’m afraid to go anywhere alone a lot of the time. I’m constantly looking over my shoulder,” the victim said. “It’s the fear of the unknown. I no longer feel safe doing my job. Attacks and robberies on the Postal Service have been through the roof lately.”

The robbery happened last year on Ryewyck Drive.

During his court appearance, Bush apologized and said he was responsible for driving the getaway car.

“He wanted everyone to know that he was nowhere near what happened in the mail truck,” said defense attorney Justin Weatherly.

Bush claims someone else robbed the mail carrier at gunpoint, taking his phone, wallet, keys and scanner. He declined to give the judge that person’s name.

The defense blamed Bush’s poor decision-making on mental health issues and head trauma he suffered while on the job.

“So I almost feel that he faced sentencing prejudice in that he didn’t seek what he should have sought which was proper medical treatment for what appeared to be a serious condition,” Weatherly said .

Judge Jack Zouhary did not accept the argument.

Bush told the court he accepts the judge’s sentence and will never go down that road again.

The victim says she hopes Bush learns from his actions.
