VIDEO: Millions of red crabs migrate to Christmas Island

CHRISTMAS ISLAND, Australia – A migration of millions of red crabs has begun in Christmas Island National Park.

The migration takes place every year after the first rain of the wet season, which usually occurs in October or November, according to Christmas Island National Park website.

Video from the national park shows red crabs from Christmas Island migrating to the beach and ocean where they will begin mating and spawning.

“The crabs kind of caught on overnight,” the camera operator says in the video. – It happens.

According to Christmas Island National Park, the exact timing of the crab migration is determined by the phase of the moon.

“Red crabs always spawn before dawn on a receding tide during the last quarter moon,” the national park website said.

A female red crab can produce up to 100,000 eggs, the website said.

Female crabs will return to the forest after laying their eggs, while male reds will return to the forest after mating, the website said.

In late October, the national park began preparing for the red crab migration by installing a crab fence to help the migrating crabs along the road to a point where they can cross roads more safely.

The annual red crab migration is Christmas Island’s biggest tourist attraction, the national park said.
