Kidnapping suspect found neighbor’s bridge hiding after hours-long standoff near Broadmoor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – An hours-long standoff involving a kidnapping suspect has ended after police say they found the man hiding in a neighbor’s attic.

According to police, the situation began Saturday morning in the area of Del Paz Drive and Union Boulevard. The area is located a few streets from North Academy.

“Officers learned that a female had entered a business and advised an employee that she had been abducted. While she was in the business, the man who kidnapped the woman entered the business and directed the woman outside and they left.”

Employees called the police, who were able to find a potential address for the suspect and victim on the other side of town near Ivywild School.

“Upon arrival, officers attempted numerous times to contact the residence to no avail,” said a CSPD lieutenant.

The police then forced their way into the house to rescue the victim.

“The woman was located on the second floor of the residence and after some time managed to escape from the residence. The woman confirmed to law enforcement that she was taken against her will at gunpoint and held against her will in her residence.”

With the woman safe, the situation escalated into a standoff with the suspect, who the victim confirmed was still in the home.

“Members from the Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU), K9 unit, drone unit and negotiator unit responded to assist,” said Lt.

The confrontation continued for hours. The home was located on Lorraine Street between Cheyenne Boulevard and Brookside, and a shelter-in-place order was put in place for homes within a few blocks:

During the confrontation, law enforcement officers could be heard yelling at the suspect over a megaphone, ordering him to surrender. Neighbors reported hearing several flash bangs.

Late Saturday afternoon, officers finally obtained a search warrant to enter the home and get the suspect out. After several attempts to get him to come out on his own, SWAT decided to check the next door neighbor’s home, which was attached to the residence where the suspect was holed up.

“The suspect had crossed the bridge and entered through the ceiling into the neighbor’s residence where he was found hiding,” said the lieutenant.

The suspect was arrested and faces a number of charges, including a previous warrant for his arrest, unrelated to Saturday’s alleged events.

Police identified the suspect as Jason Cobb. Jail records show he is being held in the El Paso County Jail without bond.
