Woman accused of overmedicating patient to make ‘work easier’

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) – A Coralville woman is facing multiple charges after she was caught giving a patient nearly six times more than needed.

Court documents show that on July 8, Coralville police were called to Brown Deer Place, a senior care facility on 1st Avenue. According to a criminal complaint, Sandra Price-Elder, 69, was seen with a syringe of oral medication. The amount of medication was six times the amount prescribed to the patient.

The criminal complaint does not identify the drug. Investigators determined the drug was ordered more often than necessary.

During an interview with investigators, Price-Elder said she began giving the patient a higher than prescribed amount in late April. Price-Elder admitted that he intentionally administered a higher dose to sedate the patient to make her “job easier.”

According to the criminal complaint, Price-Elder was responsible for providing patient care in the form of: meals, medication and hygiene needs.

Price-Elder is charged with neglect of a resident of a health care facility, administration of harmful substances and abuse of dependent adults.
