Man, 69, charged after fatal hit-and-run on Bruce Freeway at Booyal, allegedly knew motorcyclist killed

A man charged in a deadly hit-and-run on the Bruce Highway may have known the victim, police said.

Bundaberg Police Inspector Grant Marcus said three motorbikes traveling north on the Bruce Highway at Booyal, 335 kilometers north of Brisbane, were slowing down on Sunday when they entered an 80km per hour zone.

Police say Ronald Joseph Madden, a 69-year-old man from New South Wales, was driving a utility behind them and failed to slow down, subsequently hitting the back of one of the motorcycles before leaving the scene.

A 68-year-old man from Moranbah suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

Police later located the utility 4km up the highway, where the driver allegedly replaced a tire on the vehicle, which had front-end damage.

Inspector Marcus said police believed the two men were known to each other and details of their relationship were being investigated.

Police and forensics investigated the crash, which closed Bruce Road for several hours on Sunday.

Mr Madden was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene without getting help.

He is due to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates’ Court today.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has a relevant dashboard view is urged to come forward and contact police.
