Authorities said they do not expect foul play but are investigating the incident.

A man drowned Saturday in Lower Mill Pond, Easthampton authorities said.

The 25-year-old victim was kayaking in the pond, the Northwestern District Attorney said. Witnesses called emergency personnel around 2:45 p.m. to report a man “in distress in the water.”

“Two people entered the water trying to save him, but were unable to save him,” the statement said.

Members of the police dive team recovered the kayak and authorities said the victim, a Blandford resident, was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. The district attorney said another person was kayaking with the victim and was not injured.

Easthampton first responders were on the scene, as well as the Hampden County Regional Dive Team, the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team, the Massachusetts Environmental Police Bureau of Watercraft and Recreational Vehicle Safety and detectives from the District Attorney’s Office Northwestern district.

Prosecutors said they do not suspect foul play. However, an investigation into the incident is ongoing, the statement said.
