Buffalo Councilwoman Zeneta Everhart, who chairs the Education Committee, issued this statement:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the brutal attack on a boy at Martin Luther King, Jr. I park yesterday. As a mother and Councilwoman of this district, I unequivocally condemn this violence. As Chair of the Education Committee, it has been my mission to address these issues and this disgusting display of violence only underscores my commitment to doing more for our youth. Teen violence is a pressing crisis in our city that we must address together. My thoughts and prayers are with this boy’s family during this incredibly difficult time. I am in contact with both the family and Buffalo Police Commissioner Gramaglia as the investigation continues. We must come together as a community to ensure the safety of our children and work to prevent such incidents in the future.”

A spokesperson for the Buffalo Public School District gave the following statement to 7 News:

“This is a community crisis and the entire community needs to become part of the solution because this kind of senseless violence does not happen in our community. The district is actively assisting the Buffalo Police Department’s investigation of a horrific attack that occurred after school in MLK Park so that those responsible can be held legally accountable. Superintendent Dr. Williams Knight is fully aware of the attack that occurred in MLK Park yesterday afternoon and is appalled! The district will therefore take the strongest possible action against the alleged perpetrators. Since this was a targeted attack, the district is once again urging students to speak up if they see or hear anything. We extend our heartfelt best wishes to the victim and family for a speedy recovery. Superintendent Dr. Williams Knight will be contacting the victim’s family.”

Buffalo police said they could not confirm any arrests due to the ongoing investigation.
