Bronx drivers flout traffic rules to avoid $250 fines and save parking spots

Big Apple drivers are trying to avoid expensive parking tickets – and preventing people from taking their spots.

Some Bronx drivers are getting creative to avoid $250 tickets now that about 1,000 MTA buses are equipped with cameras to capture the license plates of cars blocking bus lanes.

A video shared online showed a line of illegally parked vehicles in a bus lane on Webster Avenue sitting with their trunks open, license plates pointing skyward, in an attempt to avoid cameras.

Some were impressed by the move.

“This is actually genius,” one woman marveled in the comments on the clip, which has racked up 150,000 views.

“If only my license plate was mounted on the trunk and not on the bumper,” one man complained.

Others slammed the brakes on the trunk idea.

“You’re not going to win a fight against a bus ticket,” one woman advised.

“I’m closing my trunks doing this,” warned one TikTok user.

Other plates were seen with towels covering them to prevent them from being photographed.

Fines for covering license plates to prevent them from being caught by cameras can be even higher than the ticket itself — effective since June, they range from $100 to $500.

Repeat offenders with three or more convictions within five years face a 90-day license suspension, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Avoiding bus lanes isn’t the only smart move city drivers are making.

On Monday, the same TikToker shared a video of an apparent fake fire hydrant that had overturned on a sidewalk in New York.

“People put fake fire hydrants in front of their houses so you don’t park there,” she wrote, adding: “I wonder why there are 5 fire hydrants on one block.”
