Hungary’s UEFA Nations League clash with the Netherlands on Thursday night has been halted due to a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench

Dominic Szoboszlai was visibly upset during Hungary’s UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands after Hungary coach Adam Szalai appeared to collapse. The match was brought to an abrupt halt around the seven minute mark as worried Hungarian players and coaches called for medical attention. UEFA officials were seen leading medics to the away dugout.

As silence descended over the stadium, a tent was erected around Hungary’s bench where Szalai was being treated. Visibly moved Liverpool Striker Szoboszlai gathered his teammates in a huddle as the officials deliberated on the next steps.

The official of the Hungarian Football Association X The report later confirmed that former Stuttgart and Basel striker Szalai had been taken to hospital.

“Ádám Szalai fell ill in the first minutes of the Netherlands-Hungary match, but his condition is stable and he is conscious,” a statement said. “A few minutes ago, he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Amsterdam for examination.”

Szoboszlai, who was leading his national side in the match, was playing against three of his Liverpool team-mates – Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpowho were all in the starting lineup for the Dutch team.

Liverpool midfielder and fellow captain Van Dijk spoke to the referee before it was agreed that play would continue at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The Reds team-mates could be seen sharing an emotional hug as the action resumed.
