New York Politicians Demand Whoopi Goldberg Apologize For Saying Bakery Denied Order Because Of Politics

NEW YORK – New York politicians are asking Whoopi Goldberg to apologize suggesting in the air that a local bakery refused to have “The View” co-host a batch of desserts for her birthday because of her political beliefs.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella was among the local leaders and supporters who joined Holtermann’s Bakery owner Jill Holtermann at a press conference Friday outside the 145-year-old Staten Island borough institution.

The Republican said the actor and comedian had “tarnished and defamed” the bakery by “making things to suit their needs”.

“Not everyone wakes up every day thinking about politics,” he said. “A good businessman doesn’t care about anybody’s politics.”

Fossella explained that the bakery’s decades-old power plant malfunctioned and needed to be replaced, so the shop didn’t want to commit to a large order it couldn’t fulfill.

“Just say you’re sorry so we can put this behind us,” he said without naming Goldberg.

Holtermann, speaking briefly, said she has been overwhelmed by the support as the bakery has been flooded with orders in response to the public dispute.

“I know how hard my family has worked to keep this business alive,” she said. “I wish my father was here today to see this.”

Representatives for Goldberg did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Saturday.

Goldberg is an outspoken liberal who recently refused to say President-elect Donald Trump’s name on the show.

The flap began Wednesday when Goldberg celebrated his 69th birthday on the ABC show by sharing a tray of Charlotte Russe — little sponge cakes topped with whipped cream and a cherry that he said were his mother’s favorite dessert growing up.

But as the co-hosts nibbled on the dishes, she mentioned that it took some work to get them.

“Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” she said as the audience gasped and one of the co-hosts spat out the cake in token of protest in jest. “They said their ovens stopped, but people went and took them anyway, which is why they won’t tell you who made them.”

“Not because I’m a woman, but maybe they didn’t like my politics,” Goldberg continued. “But it’s okay because you know what? Listen, this is my mother’s holiday. Take them and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you, everyone, for celebrating my birthday today.”

Holtermann she later confirmed it was her bakery and his distinctive-looking treats that Goldberg called out on air, but claimed it wasn’t about politics, it was about equipment issues.

The actor, who is originally from New York, however, took to Instagram on Thursday to double down on his claim.

“It seems a little strange that when I called a few weeks before my birthday and was told they couldn’t process my birthday order because of an equipment malfunction,” Goldberg said. in the tracking video. “But somehow they were able to take an order of 48 different of the same dessert when someone else called without using my name.”

The actor ended the video by saying that the issue didn’t spoil his special day.

“It’s all right, because I enjoyed my delicious dessert and I had a happy, sweet birthday,” Goldberg said. “Nothing better than that.”
