Theft of neighbor’s firearms leads to charges filed against Clinton County man

CLINTON CO., Mo. (KCTV) – The late-night theft in February of two of a neighbor’s firearms has led to charges against a Clinton County man.

Clinton County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed Wednesday, Nov. 13 indicate Kainen L. Norton, 28, of Holt, was charged with stealing a neighbor’s firearms.

An affidavit of probable cause filed by Clinton County Sheriff’s Office revealed that law enforcement officers were called to a home on 207th Street in the southern part of the county just before 10:00 p.m. on February 23rd with reports of a disturbance.

When law enforcement arrived, they said they found a homeowner who reported his truck had been broken into and a firearm was taken along with two loaded magazines. A second gun was also taken from a van on the property.

The victim told investigators he followed the suspect to his neighbor’s house before first responders arrived. The victim identified the suspect as Norton, his neighbor’s son.

While law enforcement was searching Norton’s home, they found one of the stolen firearms. A second search later revealed the other stolen gun. Norton was also found hiding in a shed at his mother’s house. He was arrested and questioned about the theft.

During an interview with investigators, they said Norton initially denied his involvement in the theft. He later confessed that he was high on marijuana and was not sure where he was at the time.

Norton was arrested and booked into the Clinton Co. Detention Center. for two counts of theft and one count of tampering with a motor vehicle. As of Friday, he remains behind bars, with a court hearing expected at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. No other information has been released.
