The Jaguars could hold the key to stopping the Lions

The Jacksonville Jaguars entered last weekend’s game with the Minnesota Vikings tied for last in the National Football League in forced turnovers.

11 weeks into the season, the Jaguars nearly forced more turnovers in one game against the Vikings than they had the entire season before. A truly remarkable feat for a beleaguered team.

They might just be the key to stopping their future opponents, the seemingly indomitable Detroit Lions.

After committing five turnovers in nine games, the Jaguars defense added three more against the Vikings, essentially keeping themselves in the game as long as possible.

Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen talked about the flurry of fumbles caused by his unit against one of the best decisions possible.

“I hope so,” Nielsen said. “You hope they come in droves. Just part of staying the course. I hope it continues like this.

“Two or three in a game, it would be really good to finish the season. If you were two or three in a game, you would be at the top of the league.

“We have to continue this trend and continue what we are doing. I thought our guys caught the ball, but there are some other things you point out, like, we could have had a couple more.

“We had one and we can’t really comment on … Darby (CB Ronald Darby) made a great play. He made a great play. It was a fantastic piece. That was another. We had some opportunities and we have to take advantage of them. That’s what we’re working on this week.”

Nielsen said the recent increase in turnover came from a renewed focus on turnover over the past two weeks.

He explained what happens in a defense that forces turnovers, starting with the pressure the defensive line puts on the offensive line and quarterback.

For Jacksonville to have a chance, we keep our kids on every TV.

“The whole group, the whole thing, because it rushes the coverage together,” Nielsen said.

“You get the inside force on the quarterback a lot, make it hard for them to throw, switching coverages and things like that, and I thought our secondary did a really good job of just showing one thing and doing another. It’s pretty good.”
