Family Speaks Out After 2 Haskell Flood Victims Die

HASKELL, Okla. — The family of two men who drowned in Haskell flood waters are speaking out about their tremendous loss.

Nina Turner said she could never have imagined spending the holidays without her uncle Lloyd, known as Mike to friends and family, and her cousin William.

She says that on November 8, her cousin Jessica went to pick up her brother William and then went to get some groceries.

When they returned home, they saw a large log over the bridge, and the water was rising rapidly.

Nina says her uncle Mike came down to meet them and help them through.

“She came back very quickly because she heard her father calling William’s name. When she turned around, William had fallen and so was on his knees near the edge of the bridge. She said he looked dazed and half of him was wet and we don’t know what happened if he hit his head if he tripped,” Turner said.

Both Jessica and Mike reached out to help William out of the water.

Somehow, they lost their footing and fell.

“She said she was under the water for a little while and she thought she was going to drown and she felt someone grab her shoulder and it was William and he pulled her up to a log,” Turner said.

At one point, Nina said Jessica was dragged away again, and when she reappeared, both her brother and father were gone.

“He broke free and was screaming after them. She ran for help and knocked on some neighbors’ doors because her phone was wet and broken,” Turner said.

After a desperate search, the bodies of the two men were found the next day.

William was about 100 meters from the bridge and Mike was discovered below in a field.

As this family deals with their incredible loss, Nina has set up a gofundme to help with the cost of two funerals.
