Coronation Street spoilers – Calum Lill on Joel Killer reveals

Major Coronation Street spoilers Watch from Friday’s (November 15) episode.

Coronation Street star Calum Lill spoke about the result of the Joel Deering murder mystery for the first time.

Friday’s special flashback episode brought the whodunit storyline to a head as viewers discovered that Lauren Bolton was responsible for the fatal blow that ended Joel’s life.

This moment marked the end of Calum’s time as the evil Joel, as all the scenes he filmed before leaving the cast have now aired.

Calum recently caught up The digital spy and other press to talk about the big episode.

Did you always know who killed Joel?

“At first we were all very confused and trying to figure out what was going on because we were getting bits of this and bits of that.

“We finally found out, maybe a few months before shooting, that it was going to be Lauren, but also that there were going to be so many twists and turns along the way.

“I thought, ‘It’s going to be good! If we try to put it all together, hopefully the audience will have the same effect.”

How did you feel about Lauren being the killer?

“Soap justice is definitely a thing and I think this is the best justice Joel could have gotten. He didn’t deliberately try to kill Lauren, but he happily attacked her and almost killed her.

“For it to now come full circle and for him to get a comeuppance from the person he attacked when she was vulnerable and defenseless, I think that’s what he deserves.”

Did Joel really think he could get away with his crimes by faking his own death?

“I think he did! He’s so blindly arrogant about his own skill and ability that he thinks he’s smarter than Lauren, the police, and the detectives, so of course he’ll get away with it.

“He thinks he’s really smart and he’s a man so he’s better than DS Swain, you know? So of course in his mind he was going to get away with it.

“In a way, his own arrogance was probably a big part of his downfall. He completely thought he could treat women the way he wanted and there would be no repercussions.”

Joel’s true nature was hidden from viewers for a while. Was it fun to play?

“It was! In the beginning, because I had to be under the radar, I had to be as beige as possible! As the relationship developed with Channique (Sterling-Brown), who plays Dee-Dee, we were then able to find these truly authentic moments.

“But once they said ‘cut, scene complete,’ we’d look at each other like, ‘She doesn’t know what’s coming, does she?’

The writers also presented Joel’s secret wife and child as his big secret…

“Yeah, one of the plans was, ‘It can’t be perfect, so let’s put in some kind of bad background and then hope it’s a red herring.’

What was it like filming all the extra flashback scenes?

“I left and came back. I actually finished in July, then I went back to shoot the last episode. It was nice to be back and see everyone.

“But when I came back, it was like shooting a movie. I spent 12 hours shooting one of the scenes. We had all these different cameras, green screens and special effects. I’ve never experienced anything like this before, so it was incredible.

“There were so many different aspects to Joel’s performance. I played it cute, I played it funny, I played it boring, I played it awful, and then I got to shoot scenes on location. and also on this film set.

“Where we were filming, it was THE Peaky Blinders film There, Guinness House, Talamascathese big Hollywood movies and then us. It was incredible to have this opportunity.”

Corrie used volume wall technology for these scenes, so the railway bridge location was actually indoors in a studio. Can you tell us more about it?

“He was in Gorton in a massive black room. The ceiling was probably about 70 feet high. There was a massive semicircle of screens and then we were seated in the middle. We had this long railroad bridge that we built that was on a turning table.

“So instead of the camera moving, the camera stayed where it was, the rail moved and the whole background was synced with the cameras.

“They went out on the real bridge, took 360 views of the whole place and then connected the camera so the background scenes could change.”

You posted often your baby’s reaction in real life to Joel’s key episodes. Are you going to watch it with her?

“I think it will have to! I still get a message after every episode. She watches them all. The last one he texted me was, “Eck blink, is Kit in the frame now? I’m so glad it’s not real.’

“I answered and said, ‘Oh yeah, I’m behind, but thanks for watching.’ She said: “I watch it every time! You were very bad, that’s a compliment. As always, so proud.”

How proud you are of your work Corrie?

“I hadn’t worked for two years before that and I really struggled to find my feet when I started. For about six months, when I watched the episodes, I was fighting. I would watch the episodes with my fiancee and I would go upstairs and she would know to leave me for a little bit.

“I worked so hard. I know there are definitely better actors than me, but I don’t think anyone else could have worked as hard as I did. Because I just said: “If I can give this 100% and I leave and don’t work for years, at least I know I couldn’t have done it again.”

“For this, he would wake up at 5.30 in the morning. I used to come to work and I was there for about 15 hours. I would get home around 10.30pm at night, have a quick bite to eat and then” I do another two hours of learning lines and then I do it again. That could take about three or four months when I was busy.

“Looking back, I’m done and I can sleep now! I have more time and I can see my friends. But it was probably the happiest time I’ve had. It was amazing. I’m proud of my work, not necessarily for that I think I’m great, but because I haven’t had the opportunity to work so hard before.

“I’m proud of what I’ve done, but I’m also so honored and proud of everyone else involved. There were hundreds of people involved in making this story happen. I was put in the lead of it and I got the compliments in the street, but there are hundreds of people working on the set – the costume, the make-up, the lighting, everything.

“I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity and I miss it Corrie that much. I miss people so much because they are the most incredible people. Although I only had 15 months here, it was the best time of my life.”

Do you miss your on-screen partnership with Channique?

“Yes, yes. But me and Roberta and (my fiancee) go to her place for dinner, so I still see her.”

Did you take any of Joel with you?

“I have a bunch of his suit. His smart casual stuff is prettier than any of my smart casual stuff, so I’m all set now!

“I also have the murder weapon at home. It’s like a brick that would have been part of the bridge, so I have the soft foam version. It wasn’t soft enough to be hit as hard as I was hit. in the face repeatedly by Cait (Fitton, who plays Lauren), but still softer than a brick!

“Duncan Foster, the headmaster, was saying to Cait, ‘We can tell you’re being too soft on him, go on, he’s a big boy!’ I was like, “Cait, we’ve been working on this, this is the final episode, we’ve been working together for so long, let’s sell this, this is the last one, go.”

“Luckily, the second day of shooting he was just dead on the train tracks, which was good because I needed a nap! That’s what I did for the next 12 hours.”

What are you doing next?

“I do panto in Bournemouth. I play evil in Jack and the Beanstalk. Obviously, the evil within Jack and the Beanstalk it’s the giant, so there’s a 3D giant and he’s got a normal human-sized scolo in lycra and a green hat, that’ll be me!

“I was reading the script the other day and my approach to Joel was like, ‘What is he thinking?’ What is he doing?” I was listening to dark music and rocking in a corner.

“I tried to do the same thing for this, but then I watched an audience gag about magic beans vs. baked beans and realized I don’t need to tear myself to shreds in a corner listening to scary music! I think it will be a nice break from attacking teenage girls.

“I have a streak of playing villains. Maybe one day someone will give me a chance to play someone who isn’t evil, we’ll see.”
