SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — FEMA is deployed to nine locations across the state helping families recover from Hurricanes Debby and Helene.

“We’re here as long as we see a need,” said Debra Young, a spokeswoman for FEMA. “With our disaster recovery centers, they stay open as long as people are still coming.”

At any of the disaster recovery centers, families can get one-on-one help from FEMA workers who will direct them to the right resources they need. They award money for loss or damage to property, including food loss for some who have experienced power outages.

“Some people say they got assistance with that and then their neighbor didn’t get assistance with that, so it really depends on your individual application and how you answer the questions on the application,” Young said.

FEMA’s Debra Young said they gave more than $187 million to help with both storms in Georgia. She said there is no time frame for processing claims, but you should call or visit one of their centers if you are concerned.

“If you feel like you haven’t heard back from us, always keep in touch,” Young said.

Young said the most common mistake on an application is not providing enough information, such as your insurance or damage documentation.

There are Disaster Survivor assistants now knocking on doors to bring help to people. Young said if you see one, always ask for a badge to avoid any scammers.

There are disaster recovery centers in Chatham, Liberty, Toombs, Appling and Hampton counties. You can find the nearest center on FEMA website.
