UK police to investigate treatment of England fans

Police in the UK will investigate claims Greek police in Athens used riot shields and tear gas on England supporters ahead of their Nations League match with Greece.

Officers from the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) were at the match and “worked actively” with local authorities to help “influence a change in tactics”.

The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) is asking fans to share their experiences of the situation that unfolded outside the Olympic Stadium in Athens on Thursday.

The Free Lions, the FSA’s fan embassy team, said it was “clearly still so necessary” to ensure fans were not put in “unnecessarily dangerous situations”.

In a statement to BBC Sport, the UKFPU said: “A team of officers from the UKFPU attended the match in Greece and we are aware of the difficulties some fans have experienced trying to enter the stadium.

“Officers have been actively working with their counterparts to influence a change in tactics and following the match an investigation will now take place in partnership with the FA and FSA.”

The Football Association said it was obtaining information to establish what happened.

Around 3,500 England supporters traveled to the Greek capital for the sold-out match, but some complained they were “pushed around” and received “heavy-handed” treatment from local police.

The FSA said UEFA, European football’s governing body, had also been informed.

BBC Sport has contacted UEFA for comment.

a fan, Mark, wrote on X the treatment was “completely useless” but added “unfortunately you end up waiting after England”.

another user said Local officers were “herding hundreds of fans (including children) into several entrances”, then became aggressive when “there was a crowd”.

“Despite being told in advance how things would work, let’s see the exact opposite in some cases and see how local police treated our fans using shields and tear gas to do something as simple as rearrange a tails, it’s so incredible. frustrating,” Free Lions wrote on X.

“On a night where we had a great result on the pitch, there is still so much need to do this to ensure our supporters are not put in unduly dangerous situations.”
