Vancouver police are making home arrests with ties to a designated terrorist group

Vancouver police say one person has been arrested in a hate crime investigation after a search warrant was executed at a home in the 1800 block of East 1st Avenue near Victoria Drive.

That person, who police have not identified, has now been released pending the investigation, according to VPD spokesman Sgt. Steve Addison.

The CBC has confirmed that the home belongs to Charlotte Lynne Kates, director of the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network.

Last month, the Canadian government designated Samidoun as a terrorist entity in a joint action with the USA

Kates was arrested and was released by the VPD in May after a video of a rally was posted on social media showing her praising Hamas’ attack on Israel and calling a number of terrorist organizations heroes.

According to a neighbor who asked not to be named, the VPD broke a window in Kates’ home after arriving with an armored vehicle and officers in full tactical gear.

“It was scary for all of us,” the neighbor said.

Another neighbor said they were awakened by a loud bang around 9 a.m. and then saw police behind Kates’ home, where she said two people lived.

“I’ve lived next to them for three years and they’re absolutely nice people. They’re just fighting for people’s rights,” said Darian Tourand. “I don’t think they are dangerous or terrorists in any way.”

Franco Sabellico lives on the same block in the Commercial Drive neighborhood.

“I’m concerned for the neighborhood and the community,” he said. “It’s very alarming that we can have … people associated with terrorist groups living right next to you.”

Samidoun has close ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which is listed as a terrorist entity in Canada, the US and the European Union.

Addison said the VPD’s major crime unit and emergency response team attended the home and the individual is being investigated under Penal Code Section 319, which deals with public incitement to hatred.
