Louisiana woman faces 3 years in federal prison after 2023 Baton Rouge bank robbery

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A New Iberia woman has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison in connection with a 2023 bank robbery in Baton Rouge.

Jazmine Johnnie, 23, of New Iberia, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison after being convicted of bank robbery. She was also sentenced to three years of supervised release after her release and ordered to pay $3,500 in restitution, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Johnnie allegedly admitted to driving a rented Dodge Challenger to the JPMorgan Chase Bank branch location on Highland Road on Oct. 9, 2023. According to the DOJ, she stated that she “spoke to the teller stating that she would leave the bank and return the next day.” She left the bank and walked away.

Johnnie returned to the same bank on October 10, 2023. According to the DOJ, when Johnnie entered the bank lobby, he stopped at the desk and wrote a note on the back of a white withdrawal slip.

According to the DOJ, the note read: “This bomb in my bag will explode in 5 minutes! My BF is talking to the cashier with an AK and is ready to shoot if the cops are (sic) security is notified(.) You have 15 seconds to give me 45,000 is (sic) everyone dies. The timer is on. Try anything or notify anyone and the bomb will go off. The clock is ticking.”

“$45,000” had a circle around it, according to the DOJ.

After writing the ticket, Johnnie made his way to the cashier, where he slipped the notary. According to the DOJ, Johnnie put down her purse and revealed her phone screen to the teller. Her phone showed a timer counting down.

“Finally, the teller gave Johnnie $3,500 in cash. After placing the money in his purse, Johnnie exited the bank, returned to the Challenger and drove away,” according to the DOJ statement.

She eventually turned herself in to police and admitted to the robbery during a post-arrest interview, according to the DOJ.
