3 keys to a Bruins win over Washington

The UCLA Bruins (4-5) have a chance to do something special this season and continue their season-changing run they’ve been on the past three weeks. They will be looking for a fourth straight win and third on the road in their last four games.

There are three keys to the Bruins making it in Seattle as they face another team in their first season in the Big Ten, the Washington Huskies (5-5).

Run the game staying steady

The Bruins respond from their best game on the ground all season, gaining 211 rushing yards, 125 of which came from quarterback TJ Harden. They’re still the lowest-rated team in the conference running the football (89.1), but that didn’t stop them last week.

That bodes well for the Bruins, as they’ll be playing a Husky defense that’s third-worst in stopping the run, allowing 162.3 rushing yards per game — far fewer defensive fronts than they saw a week ago in Iowa, the Bruins will have a chance to replicate last week’s performance and control the contest.

If Harden can pull off what he did last week, the Huskies will have a tough time stopping this Bruins offense. Senior quarterback Ethan Garbers continued to play well despite three fumbles last week. His passing game has improved and he will succeed if Harden has another strong rushing game.

Getting quarterback pressure

The Huskies have allowed a total of 23 sacks this season, and their offensive front has struggled in recent weeks. If the Bruins can get pressure on fifth-year senior quarterback Will Rogers, he’ll have a long, grueling night controlling their offense.

A pair of Bruin linebackers have been at the top of their game this season and will need to wreak havoc once again this week. Senior Oluwafemi Oladejo and juniors Carson Schwesinger they’ve combined for 6.5 sacks this year and should be able to find pressure against this defense.

Clutch kicks

There is no doubt that this game will be competitive with a tight score for the entire game. The Bruins have won each of their last three games by seven points or fewer, and the same is expected in a very even contest. The hitting unit will have to step up in the clutch again to get the win.

Sophomore transfer Mateen Bhaghani had the best game of his career last week, beating the two field goals needed to beat the Hawkeyes. Bhaghani kicked a 57-yard field goal for a career and the second-longest in program history.

The former Cal Bear will be asked to come in and hit a game-changing shot, just like last week’s game-winning field goal with just minutes left. He has continued to earn the trust of his coaching staff and will have to come up big for the Bruins.
