Central Texas High School football game halted after player gets injured, teams come together in support of recovery

BARTLETT, Texas (KWTX) – Bartlett ISD says one of its high school football players got injured, halting its homecoming game as both teams came together in support of his recovery.

Bartlett ISD Superintendent Teddy Clevenger said the student, Frankie Gonzales, got hit in the back of his neck, and, when crews took him off the field, he was able to wiggle his toes.

He said Bartlett ISD and Somerville ISD players, coaches and fans stopped the game and came together on the center of the field to pray for Gonzales. The students took turns praying for his recovery, Clevenger said.

“It was a beautiful thing to witness,” Clevenger said in a statement to KWTX. “A reminder to all that, with God, all things are possible.”

The teams decided to stop the game, and the district decided to move homecoming festivities, including the dance, to next week.

In an update Saturday morning, Clevenger said the football player’s CT scan came back clear, and the neurologist decided to admit him to get an MRI before release.

Bartlett ISD Varsity Football Team was up against Somerville ISD at Holland ISD’s stadium while the district’s stadium was being built. He said there has been an outpouring of support from all communities in the area.

The City of Bartlett posted a photo with ‘Praying for Frankie’ on its Facebook page last night.

This is a developing story.
