Police continue to search for teenager in Kansas drug bust

DOUGLAS COUNTY — Law enforcement is investigating a shooting in Lawrence that sent a man to the hospital and continues to search for a teenage suspect.

Just before 8:00 p.m. Monday, police were called to 3323 Iowa Street around where they found a 26-year-old victim with multiple gunshot wounds to the leg, according to police spokeswoman Laura McCabe. Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical transported the man to an area trauma center.

Initial reports indicate a drug deal and it is believed to have turned into a robbery. Investigators worked through the night to identify witnesses and clues, which led them to a nearby residence where the suspects were believed to have run after the shooting. Investigators requested and received a search warrant to enter the residence.

The Lawrence Police Tactical Team was activated, surrounded the residence and was able to get one of the suspects to come out shortly after 3:00 a.m. Cameron Cooper, of Lawrence, the alleged shooter, was safely taken into custody. Cooper was taken to the Douglas County Correctional Facility, where he is being held on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery.

A 17-year-old was not found at home and has not been located. Police believe he may have left the area, but investigators are continuing to follow leads.
