Comal County begins construction of a new women’s shelter

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – New Braunfels is taking another step to support survivors of domestic violence by creating a new shelter.

Today was the pouring of concrete for that shelter, which will be called the Comal County Crisis Center.

The shelter is planned to have 30 thousand square meters and take care of 90 women and children. This comes after its first shelter was destroyed in a fire in 2022.

Organizers say – it’s about giving victims a safe place.

“Right now, if people call a hotline in Texas, there’s a 50/50 split on whether they’ll find a place to stay,” said Dr. Julie Strentzsch, CEO of the Crisis Center. “By adding this space, we’re making sure they have a place to stay safe and out of harm’s way.”

Just last year, over 200 people were killed by an intimate partner, with guns being used in 63% of these murders.

The youngest victim was 15 years old.
