CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A storm system offers a decent chance at wet weather midweek.

Your first alert: Cold and dry overnight leads to wet Wednesday

We’ve got mostly clear skies for the evening after some bothersome clouds lingered in parts of the TV9 viewing area today. Temperatures will drop, although not as quickly as last night, with some lingering winds. Expect lows in the mid to high 30s.

Clouds will gradually build this evening, with a mix of cloudier and clearer skies early Tuesday. And these are completed by mid-morning with a gray day. Showers begin to move into our western counties by late morning or early afternoon, spreading eastward for the rest of the day. Ahead of these showers, temperatures should be able to warm into the 40s or near 50s.

These showers continue into Wednesday evening and night, ending from west to east a few hours before Thursday. Overall, rainfall amounts will be on the lighter side, generally a tenth or two of an inch.

Drier and pleasant weather for most of the weekend

After this storm system, expect a few days of weather that will be pretty decent for mid-November. Initially, clouds and blustery conditions will remain Thursday, keeping temperatures in the low 40s to low 50s for highs.

A small boost to highs comes with more sunshine on Friday and Saturday. Lows will be in the 30s and 40s, but daytime temperatures will reach into the 50s for most of us. Dry conditions persist during this period and Friday in particular will see lighter winds.

There is a small risk of some light showers on Sunday, but this looks fairly limited at best. Not everyone will see this precipitation as most of us will wait until next week for a better chance.

Your first alert: After the dry start, a complex weather pattern brings precipitation

Monday should be another cloudier start to the work and school week, with slightly cooler temperatures after the weekend. Lows in the 30s and highs in the upper 40s to 50s make a comeback, though this remains a few degrees above normal until then.

A storm system will develop to our southwest by Tuesday, tracking northeast into the region. This will be a source of at least a chance of rain through Tuesday, with the potential for additional precipitation chances over the next few days.

Accurate tracking and timing of this system will be critical to the weather impact we see here in eastern Iowa. There will also be a complicated interaction between this system and a potential tropical system in the western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The timing and path of that system will affect the one that brings us wetter weather. Given the right combination of circumstances, we could see our first snowflakes of the season by Wednesday or Thursday.

As such, the details in exact terms are still too uncertain to be firmly established, but will become clearer in the next few days. Stay with us from now until then.
