Suspect charged in Birmingham shooting that killed one man and injured another

A suspect has been charged in connection with an attack in Birmingham that killed one man and injured another.

Andrew Blake Carter, 37, is charged in the Oct. 30 slaying of Melvin Anthony Burkes, 38, according to court records released Tuesday.

He is also charged with attempted murder for injuring the surviving victim.

The shooting happened that Wednesday just after 6:00 p.m in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue SW

Police received a call of a person shot and ended up finding a man with a non-life threatening wound. Officers then found Burkes lying on the sidewalk with critical gunshot wounds.

Bystanders offered aid to Burkes until officers took over life-saving measures.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue took both victims to UAB Hospital, where Burkes was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m.

A motive has not been disclosed.

Carter was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Friday and remains held without bond.
