WKU quarterback Caden Veltkamp will remain the starter as TJ Finley returns from injury

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – During WKU head football coach Tyson Helton’s weekly press conference, Helton officially announced that Caden Veltkamp will remain the starting quarterback for the Hilltoppers and TJ Finley will serve as the backup after returning from injury.

Helton said Finley returned to practice last week and was available to play at New Mexico State if needed.

“You know TJ came back last week, this was his first week back at practice. It fit (top) for the game, it was available if I needed it. He has a backup role right now,” Helton said. “I’ve been really impressed with TJ, even though in the role he plays, (we) always talk about owning your role and he even likes it on the sidelines during the game. I see him talking to Caden and telling Caden what he’s seeing from the sidelines, so that’s hugely beneficial.”

During the Hilltoppers’ game against Middle Tennessee, Finley went down in the first quarter after taking a hit, and the quarterback brought him down with his full body weight on Finley’s leg.

Since taking over, Veltkamp has led the Tops to a 7-1 record and a perfect 5-0 record in the CUSA. In the seven games, Veltkamp completed 71% of his passes for 1,939 yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 7 rushing touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

“Caden has shown he deserves to be named the starter, we’ve won a lot of games with him and he deserves to be in that role,” Helton said. “Really, at the end of the day, I’m glad we’ve got two quality defenders.”

WKU returns home to Houch this Saturday when WKU takes on Louisiana Tech for its homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
