Spirit Airlines plane to Haiti hit by gunfire, crew member injured

A Spirit Airlines plane was hit by gunfire as it attempted to land in Haiti on Monday (November 11th), leading to the cancellation of flights on major US airlines.

A flight attendant on the flight from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was also injured, a statement from Spirit, obtained by NBC News confirmed. “A flight attendant on board reported minor injuries and is being assessed by medical staff. No guest injuries were reported.” The flight was eventually diverted to the Dominican Republic. Upon inspection, damage consistent with gunshots could be observed.

The US Embassy in Port-au-Prince believes the incident was part of “gang-led efforts to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince, which may include armed violence and disruption of roads, the port and airports.” Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s main international airport, has since ceased operations, CNN reports including airlines JetBlue and American have released statements confirming they will suspend service to Port-au-Prince.

The incident follows the swearing in of interim Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, who promised to restore peace and hold elections, something the nation has not done since 2016.

A United Nations helicopter was also hit by bullets while flying over Port-au-Prince just last month. In February, gang violence forced the capital’s airport and main seaport to close, cutting the population off from vital supplies and aid.
