Marvin Haynes is seeking nearly $2 million in wrongful conviction

Nearly a year after his exoneration after spending nearly 20 years in prison, Marvin Haynes has filed a lawsuit against the state of Minnesota, seeking $100,000 for each year he was wrongfully imprisoned.

Haynes, who was convicted of killing 55-year-old Randy Sherer in 2005, was exonerated last December after spending about 20 years in a Stillwater prison on first-degree murder and assault charges of the second degree. He was 16 when he was charged.

In documents filed Thursday in Minnesota Supreme Court, Haynes’ attorneys asked the judge to award him $100,000 for each year he was wrongfully incarcerated, in addition to an award for “undue damages.”

The petition states that Haynes is entitled to compensation for lost wages while he was incarcerated.

The court filing added that since his exoneration, Haynes has had to “navigate reintegration into society almost entirely on his own and start his adult life from scratch.”

Haynes’ attorneys also say Haynes feels the effects of the trauma of prison every day and has had to request neuropsychological testing, a psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medical and mental health treatment.
