Former MLA Barguna Shambhu was remanded in custody for six days

A Dhaka court today remanded Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, former Awami League MLA from Barguna-1, in six-day remand in a case filed over the death of trader Abdul Wadud during the quota reform protests in New Market in Dhaka on July 19.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mr Sharifur Rahman gave the order after the investigating officer Mr Jahangir Arip, an inspector of the Detective Branch of the police, produced him before the court around 9:00 am with a prayer of 10 days’ remand , said a sub-inspector working in the court. In the remand prayer, the IO said that Shambhu was involved in the murder. So he must be arrested to find out vital clues and the whereabouts of other fugitives responsible for the crimes.

The defense applied for bail along with remand on the grounds that their client was only involved in the case to harass him. They further said that their client is now 77 years old and suffering from various ailments including complications of old age.

Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the defense requests and remanded him in custody for questioning about the incident.

Abdul Wadud, 45, a shopkeeper of Priyangon Shopping Center in the New Market area, was killed in the New Market area of ​​the city during the recent Student Anti-Discrimination Movement on July 19.

The victim’s relative Abdur Rahman filed the case on August 21 against 130 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and the AL leadership, including Obaidul Quader, Anisul Huq, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Salman F Rahman and Amir Hossain Amu.

The Detective Branch (DB) of the police arrested Shambhu from Uttara area of ​​the capital yesterday.

Shambhu has been elected as an MP five times representing his Barguna-1 constituency since 1991. He also served two stints as Deputy Minister of Food and Shipping Ministries.
