Lawyers are filing motions in the case of a 17-year-old accused of killing his mother

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) – An attorney for the Polk County teenager accused of killing his mother has filed several motions in the case.

Collin Griffith has been charged with first-degree murder and will be charged as an adult in the death of his mother on September 11, 2024. Deputies say the teenager called 911 for help, saying he and his mother had been arguing. He claimed that during this argument, his mother lunged at him with a knife and fell on top of him, resulting in a deep stab wound to the neck.

Polk County Firefighters responded to the Auburndale home with emergency medical services, and Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies also responded. When they arrived at the scene, she was pronounced dead.

Deputies asked the teenager what happened and he immediately became uncooperative and asked to speak to an attorney. As the investigation continued, detectives began to notice inconsistencies between what he had stated happened in his 911 call and what was discovered at the scene.

More details revealed that Griffith was also arrested in the shooting death of his father in Oklahoma in February 2023. The teenager was arrested and charged in that incident, but the charges were later dropped on grounds of self-defense.

He was also charged with domestic violence against his mother in November 2023 by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives spoke with witnesses who told them they saw the teenager and his mother outside the residence earlier, arguing verbally. They saw him take his mother by the hair and drag her into the house.

According to these witnesses, his mother repeatedly asked him to “let me go.”

Griffith’s lawyers have now filed to limit information about his father’s death. They have also filed a bail application in the case.

A status hearing will be held on November 21. Griffith will be in court for a decision on the motions on January 21, 2025
