Lawyer SC Momtaz shows arrested in case of murder, sent to prison

A Dhaka court today sent Supreme Court lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmad Mehedi to jail in a case filed over the death of 34-year-old Alamgir Hossain during police firing outside Azampur South-East Bank of Uttara, during the movement of quotas in August. 5.

Investigating officer Abdul Halim, a sub-inspector of the Uttara Paschim police station, produced him before the Dhaka Court Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque with a seven-day prayer.

The magistrate, however, said the remand hearing will be held after receiving the case documents as they are now in the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court for hearing a bail application of another accused in the case.

Prior to this, Momtaz Uddin, who was and was the General Secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, was shown arrested in the file after the IO filed an application in this regard, even though his name was not included in the first information report ( FIRE).

In today’s remand prayer, IO Abdul Halim said the accused was involved in the incident and must be arrested to find out vital clues and the whereabouts of others responsible for committing such crimes.

The defense lawyers filed an application seeking bail and cancellation of the remand prayer on the ground that their client’s name was not included in the FIR. Their client was brought into the case just to harass him.

Police arrested Momtaz Uddin from his Uttara residence yesterday noon.

The case was filed on October 6 against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 287 others at the Uttara Paschim police station.

Alamgir Hossain, 34, a resident of Uttara Paschim police station, was killed in police firing outside Azampur South-East Bank in Uttara during the August 5 quota reform movement.
