One man has died and two others have been injured in a stabbing in a south London market. police they said.

There were three people attacked Sunday morning at East Street Market off Walworth Road in south London, the Metropolitan Police said.

While one man died at the scene, two other people – a man and a woman – were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

A man, believed to be in his 60s, was arrested at the scene and remanded in custody.

The incident is not being treated as terrorism, police said.

The Metropolitan Police Commander Peter Stevens said: “Tragically a man lost his life this morning and officers are working hard to establish exactly what happened and to provide support to his family. My sincere thoughts and sympathies are with them and the other injured people.

“Our investigation is at a very early stage. A man was quickly arrested by police who responded to the incident. At present, although inquiries are ongoing, no one else is being sought.

“The incident is not being treated as terrorism. Inquiries are ongoing, led by dedicated Crime Specialist detectives.

“I want to thank those people who have already shared their accounts of what they saw with the police. I would urge anyone with information or footage, or any witnesses yet to speak to police, to get in touch.”
