Canada-bound traffic on the Ambassador Bridge was halted for several hours Saturday after a tragic incident involving a Canada Border Services Agency officer.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Windsor police said officers were on the scene at the Ambassador Bridge for “an ongoing investigation.”

Traffic to Canada was diverted to the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

In a joint statement late Saturday, the Canadian Public Service Alliance and the Immigration and Customs Union said a border officer “took his life on the job” in Windsor.

“PSAC and the Customs and Immigration Union are aware of the tragic incident that took place,” the statement said. “Incidents like this highlight the challenges public safety personnel can face throughout their careers.

“They remind us of the need for a comprehensive mental health support structure and the importance of removing barriers to accessing these services, both in professional and private settings.”

Officers and a forensic investigation vehicle were stationed around the secondary inspection area, cordoned off with yellow police tape, between 10.30am and 3pm.

Shortly after 3 p.m., lanes of the bridge from Detroit to Windsor had reopened.

“We are very saddened by the disappearance today of a CBSA employee who was working at the Ambassador Bridge,” the CBSA spokesperson. Karine Martel told the Windsor Star. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends and colleagues of a respected member of the CBSA community who worked in the southern Ontario region.

“Out of respect for loved ones, no further information will be shared.”

CBSA employees seeking support are encouraged to contact the Employee Assistance Program at 1-877-367-0809. For confidential assistance, individuals may contact 1-877-338-0275.

Traffic to the United States was not affected by the investigation.
