Dozens dead as Israel strikes northern Gaza, medics say

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA and Hamas the media estimated the number of people killed at 32.

There was no immediate confirmation of the number by the territory’s Ministry of Health.

The Civil Emergency Service says its operations have been stopped by a ongoing Israeli raid in two cities and a refugee camp in northern Gaza, which began on October 5.

He could not give a figure for those killed in the attack.

Israel says it has sent forces to Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun in the north of the enclave to fight Hamas militants who launch attacks there and prevent them from regrouping.

His troops are said to have killed hundreds of militants in those areas since the new offensive began.

In Gaza City, an Israeli airstrike on a house in the Sabra neighborhood on Sunday killed Wael Al-Khour, a Ministry of Defense official, and seven other members of his family, including his wife and children, doctors and relatives.

The Israeli military said it was looking into reports of the strike in Jabalia and the Sabra neighborhood.

Efforts to conclude a ceasefire between the two sides in the conflict have so far been deadlocked, Israel and Hamas trade blame.

Hamas wants a deal to end the war and a prisoner-for-hostage deal, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the war will only stop once Hamas is eradicated.

Qatar ends cease-fire efforts until Israel and Hamas show willingness to resume talks

Qatarwhich has been trying to negotiate a ceasefire with Egypt and the US, has told Hamas and Israel it will halt its efforts until both sides demonstrate “willingness and seriousness” to resume talks, its foreign ministry said on Saturday.

The three nations have been working for months on fruitless talks between the conflicting parties in Gaza, and any disengagement from that process could further complicate efforts to reach an agreement.

“Qatar notified the parties 10 days ago, during the last attempts to reach an agreement, that it will stop its mediation efforts between Hamas and Israel if no agreement is reached in the round,” said the foreign ministry of Qatar.

“Qatar will resume these efforts with its partners when the parties demonstrate their willingness and seriousness to end the brutal war.”

There has been no official response from Hamas or Israel.

Qatar has hosted the political leaders of Hamas since 2012 as part of an agreement with the US.

The last round of talks in mid-October failed to reach an agreement, with Hamas rejecting a proposed short-term ceasefire. Israel has previously rejected some proposals for a longer truce.

Disagreements centered on the long-term future of Hamas and Israel’s presence in Gaza.

The war broke out when Hamas gunmen attacked Israeli communities on October 7, 2023killing about 1,200 people and seizing another 253 hostages, according to Israeli accounts.

Israel’s military campaign has leveled much of Gaza and killed an estimated 43,500 Palestinians, Palestinian health officials say.
