North Platte police are investigating a shooting in North Walnut

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The North Platte Police Department is investigating a shooting on the city’s north side.

Law enforcement was called to 1016 North Walnut after a caller reported a vehicle had entered a parked car in the 300 block of East 10th Street. The driver was slumped over the wheel.

Officers learned that a 36-year-old man had been shot and left the home before police arrived.

According to police, the man was taken to Great Plains Health by ambulance with life-threatening injuries and will be taken to another medical facility for a higher level of care.

The suspect, 23-year-old Daveante Booker of Evansville, IN, fled the scene of the shooting and law enforcement began a search of his vehicle.

Booker was in the Dollar General parking lot with his girlfriend and 18-month-old daughter. Both adults were detained and the child was taken into protective custody.

During the investigation, officers learned that Booker’s girlfriend was related to one of the residents who lived at 1016 N. Walnut and had arrived in North Platte several weeks ago with Booker.

Police said an argument between Booker and his girlfriend and the victim at the home turned into a physical altercation between the victim and the suspect.

Booker pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot the victim in the chest.

Booker was arrested and taken to the Lincoln County Detention Center. He faces a first-degree assault, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony charge.

Several patrol units from the North Platte Police Department were also seen inside the Dollar General location.

Search warrants are being executed at the suspect’s home and car.

Police will remain at the scene throughout the day conducting interviews and searches.
