Helena Police Officer Helping Prevent Child Death in Alabama

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A Helena police officer is joining a statewide team trying to identify trends that are putting our children at risk.

Gov. Kay Ivey appointed Sgt. Adam Sample at the state child death review board. This review board is part of the state’s child mortality system through the Department of Public Health.

Experienced in crime scene investigation, Sgt. Sample is following in his father’s footsteps by joining this team.

Sgt. The sample will help review cases of child deaths and identify how to prevent them from happening to other children.

This team meets quarterly to review a variety of child death cases, including sudden infant death syndrome. Their goal is to dig deeper into what happened and the factors that led to the death in order to develop a prevention plan.

“The most important mission for the team is to be able to find ways to prevent better so that we can take it to the governor, to the legislators, so that we can have ways to prevent things through legislation and education,” Sgt. Sample said.

Several laws and programs like the graduate license law have come out of teams like this, which is why Sgt. Sample says these are critical to keeping children safe.
